Montagu wordt wel eens de hoofdstad van de Langebergen genoemd en dateert terug van 1851.
De naam is die van de Koloniale secretarisch John Montagu die in de periode van zijn ambt de eerste
wegbouw programma's lanceerde (1843-53) De regio staat voor bekend voor zijn productie van
schitterende muscadel wijnen maar eveneens voor de fruitteelt.
De meest gekende manier om Montagu binnen te rijden vanuit de richting van Kaapstad is
die via de Cogman's kloof (via de R60 die naar R62 route gaat)
